trying to remotely admin a server that is doing weird things.  no http, no ssh, but ping works.  need to get drupal back online for the researchers, so i start diggin' for answers.  an hour with google produced little in the way of help.  so i start to diagnose on my own:

G5-server:~me$ locate nmap

/usr/share/man/man3/Tk_UnmapWindow.3tcl
/usr/share/zsh/4.2.3/functions/_nmap

say what?  ok, clearly not what i want.  so i go hunting for nmap just like, when i tired of curl, i had to go hunting for wget when that didn't come native inside the brushed-metal heap costing heap K dollars.

well, it turns out that to install nmap on tiger the easy way (as opposed to compiling the goddamn source on your fucking own), you kinda need to install fink first. ok, a bit of a hassle, but fine.  oh, wait, but to install fink, you need to first install darwinports, and no, no nice link or listing of the binary package.  no, you need to hunt for it, jumping through hoops like a trained seal.  ok, finally downloading…oh, wait, just so you know, before you can install darwinports, you'll need to make sure you have apple's xcode dev tools installed.  you have those somewhere, right?  if not, apple should provide.

fuck you and fuck this rabbit hole, i'm just gonna go into the office tomorrow and reboot.  WITH MY BARE HANDS.

(there, there, young man, calm down, no need to rage against the boxen…the future will be better tomorrow…)
